ATLANTA – Funeral services have been scheduled for a sheriff's deputy in Georgia who authorities say was shot by a National Guardsman who then killed himself on the side of a highway.
Officials in Augusta said a church service was set for Thursday for 47-year-old Richmond County sheriff's Deputy James D. Paugh.
Officials say 26-year-old Spc. Christopher Michael Hodges was firing gunshots at passing cars early Sunday moments before the off-duty deputy pulled over to investigate a suspicious car on the side of the road. Authorities say evidence shows that Hodges had fired 35 rounds from his M4 semiautomatic rifle.
Military officials say Hodges served in the Tennessee National Guard but was on temporary duty at Fort Gordon in Georgia for training.
