The city of Stockton, Calif., which sits just east of Oakland, may have had 56 murders in 2011, which means the city could have possibly seen more homicides this year than in any year they have been counted, Fox40.com reports.
The case that would reportedly establish the city's record homicide rate involves a dead body found in an apartment. Although authorities have not confirmed the death was a homicide, a man has been booked into jail on murder charges, the station reported.
Authorities would not release details about the arrest of suspect Devon Epps, but the station reported that he was booked at 2 a.m. A building manager told the station that Epps was recently evicted from the apartment.
Stockton’s previous murder record occurred in 1992, with 55 killings, the station reported.
